Read the instructions clearly and carefully
Before jumping in to clean your dryer, you should make a point to read all the instructions given in the instructions manual. Different machines will have a different cleaning process and different parts. Also, different models of the same company will have different spare parts and different cleaning processes. So, it is better to read the manual and then go ahead with the cleaning process.
Know the difference between different vents
First of all, you should know the main difference between the dryer vent cleaning, dryer lint screen, and trap cleaning. Cleaning each and every part is important, but, it is a separate task. The dryer lint screen and the trap are located on the top of the dryer or just inside the door. The vent is connected to the dryer at the back of the machine. The dryer lint screen should be cleaned after each and every load. To clean the lint screen just remove the lint with your finger and replace it back. The lint trap that is located below the lint screen can be vacuumed or cleaned with a long brush. This process will prevent the build-up of clogs in your vent trap and prevent accidents.
Clean the dryer vent regularly
It is recommended that you clean your dryer vent once or twice a year. But, if your dryer is an older version machine then you may need to clean the vent more often. The machine may start giving you signals that your vent needs a thorough cleaning. These signals include longer drying cycles, the clothes not drying properly, the dryer becoming too hot while drying, the musty or unusual smell when you open the door. If any of these things happen then it is a good idea to start with the cleaning of the dryer vent, and then delve into other problems. The amount of lint appearing on the lint screen or on the lint trap may also increase.

- Clean the lint trap
- Wipe the dryer drum clean
- Clean the vent with the help of rotary brush
- Check if something is obstructing the exterior vent

Turn off and unplug your dryer
Inorder to clean any instrument you should make sure that the power supply to it is switched off and the instrument is unplugged. If you are using a gas dryer it will be necessary to turn off the gas supply. When you are not sure how to do it, then it is better to call a professional for the cleaning of the dryer.
Take the dryer out and remove the vent clamp
You may need to pull out the dryer to get access to the vent duct. Then you will have to unscrew the clamp holding the duct pipe to the wall. You may squeeze the pipe out or unscrew the pipe depending on the type how it is built. Now you can also inspect the vent piping for cracks or any other kind of damage and decide if you need to replace the vent pipe or not.
Clean the lint trap
It is a very important step to follow. Clearing the lint that is captured in the lint trap will prevent fire accidents from occuring. A lint free trap will allow better flow of air. Use of fabric softeners and dryer sheets will lead to increase build up of debris and lint and hence very necessary to clean it frequently. You can also use old toothbrush deeped in warm soapy water to clean the lint trap.
Wipe the dryer drum clean
Residue from the dryer lint can also build up on the inside of the dryer drum. So, once a month it is also necessary to wipe the dryer drum with cloth dipped in ½ vinegar and ½ warm water mix and clean it. Wipe it with a micro fiber cloth and keep the dryer door open for some time.
Clean the vent ducts with the help of rotary brush kit
It is also important to clean the vent ducts that lead from the back of the dryer to the outside of your home. The manufacturers have made this very easy now a days with easy access to the vent ducts and cleaning it properly with the rotary brush kit. Here is how to use the rotary brush kit.
First of all move the dryer away from the wall to familiarize with the type of the duct and its connection. Most of the connection will be made at a 45 degree or 90 degree angle. The duct vent will be either solid metal or of soft metal type with angular fitting to avoid twists and turns. These angular fittings are attached to each other with the help of couplings and you will also see a lot of duct taping.
First of all clean the visible dust with the help of the vacuum cleaner. Then you have to attach the rotary brush kit to the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner and fit it on the other side to the piping of the vent. It is also provided with the coupling removal kit (most probably a screw driver is also needed ). This will help to remove the couplings and fit one end of the nozzle with the help of duct tapes to the vent piping. Make all the connections and then switch on the vacuum cleaner and clean the vent duct.
Also, go outside and check the outlet you also need to clean that deeply in order to maintain your dryer.
Check if something is obstructing the exterior vent
There may have grown some obstructions surrounding the exterior vent outside your house like trees growing, birds making a nest or rodents entering through the vent. If, it is so then it is necessary to install a particular vent filter against it.
Reattach the vent to the machine
After doing all this cleaning vacuum the debris that have fallen and then join the dryer to the vent with the help of clamp and the couplings. Then push the machine back to the wall and attach it to the main power supply and switch the power on.
